Learning Options? It takes patience and paper trading

In a recent conversation with some students who are learning to trade options, they commented that they find it hard to practice in their paper-trading accounts. They felt that they needed real money to be interested. One student made the comment that a boxer develops skills by sparing, but he/she learns by actually fighting.

My response was that they are correct that emotions affect a traders ability to trade.

But with regards to paper trading, it is essential that people learning options don’t use real money until they have mastered the material.

I am certain that a student airplane pilot will experience “unique emotions” when his plane in in a tailspin. I am pretty sure that a surgeon will experience some “strong first-time feelings” when his patient’s EKG goes flat line.

That’s why they practice first on simulators and cadavers before the real thing.

In the boxing example, sparing is papertrading. But, a new boxer doesn’t jump into the ring to fight with professionals on their first bout. When you are in the market, you are in there with the pros. The punches are real… and they feel that way, too.

Novice traders can find themselves in some very perilous situations if they are not careful. The covered call is often the first options trade that someone learns. It involves long (buying) stock and a short (selling) a call. The most you can lose is what you paid for the stock, less the credit received for selling the call (not counting commissions.) If the trader exits the trade in the wrong order – sell the stock before buying back the call – they will find themselves with a naked call. In that situation, the trader has UNLIMITED RISK. That does happen and it can be very hazardous to your portfolio.

I would argue that you don’t need to learn with real money, if you are serious about learning.

If you need emotion or skin-in-the-game to be interested, I would suggest you reflect on what that says about yourself. I am not making any assumptions or judgments. It could mean nothing or a lot of different things. For example: Are you impatient? Are you really committed to learning or do you just want to make money, quickly? Are you a gambler? Etc.

Emotion is a very important factor in investing. It can be your worst enemy. That is the reason I hammer on my students for having a trading plan with Primary and Secondary Exits defined BEFORE they enter a trade. That is the best way to control emotions.

I have heard more than one OptionsANIMAL graduate say that they wished someone would have told them (more strongly – because they are all most certainly told) not to trade with real money before graduating.

IN FACT, I would be surprised if you could be consistently profitable without going through an entire options education program, like OptionsANIMAL. So, instead of paper trading, you’re ok with that money being considered as tuition, go for it!

If you’re ok with losing that money, maybe you should consider an investment in options education. It reminds me of a quote from Ben Franklin “The only thing more expensive than education is ignorance.”

This is not a get rich scheme. It's an investment. It's not for people that want to lightly dabble in options trading. You need to know what you are doing, commit time and effort, and the instructors are serious about setting realistic goals and getting you there.
10/12/24: Update to my review from 2018 (my first year as an Options Animal member).

First, I have found this organization to be ethically amazing. (The salesperson might twist your arm slightly, but I guess that is what they do.) I have been to several of their registration-free Summits and Marketing seminars (that usually include a nice breakfast). Never once did they put any pressure on me to buy a membership. You actually can get something for nothing, and the CEO, Greg Jennings, gives us this gift.

Speaking of membership, like so many of the members and instructors, we wish we had found Options Animal earlier in life. The education that includes a scaffolded curriculum and instructor-led open forums is the Holy Grail of spread-trading.

The instructors are the most warm and empathic people you would ever want to meet. They are some of the best spread-traders in the world, but they are instructing us because they were once us. I heard two of the instructors specifically say that their role as instructors was a vocational calling.

The other members are amazing. The education is for beginners before moving into the advanced portion of the curriculum. I have never heard another member giving another member a hard time asking a basic question. We were all there once, and, frankly, the beginners' questions are helpful to the more advanced folk, too. The first 30 minutes of the weekly forums (usually >4/week) are dedicated solely to beginners.

Time? You should put at least 1 hour per day into it. Paper trade (fake money) instead of real money. If you want to make a quick buck, Options Animal may not be for you. With Options Animal methods, we learn how to make money while we sleep and how to make 10% on a stock if the stock goes down 5% while still maintaining a bullish view.

Options Animal Education was definitely some of the best money I ever spent. I just wish I had known about them sooner. Thank you OA!

2018: I've read books on options for over 20 years but really never felt like I had a specific strategy to hedge my stocks because there are so many from which to chose. OptionsAnimal has an excellent strategy/approach that allows me to hedge my stocks based on my personality style within the OA system. The instructors are brilliant and passionate about what they do and want nothing more than to help their students of all skill levels. Thank you OA!
