Learning Options? It takes patience and paper trading

In a recent conversation with some students who are learning to trade options, they commented that they find it hard to practice in their paper-trading accounts. They felt that they needed real money to be interested. One student made the comment that a boxer develops skills by sparing, but he/she learns by actually fighting.

My response was that they are correct that emotions affect a traders ability to trade.

But with regards to paper trading, it is essential that people learning options don’t use real money until they have mastered the material.

I am certain that a student airplane pilot will experience “unique emotions” when his plane in in a tailspin. I am pretty sure that a surgeon will experience some “strong first-time feelings” when his patient’s EKG goes flat line.

That’s why they practice first on simulators and cadavers before the real thing.

In the boxing example, sparing is papertrading. But, a new boxer doesn’t jump into the ring to fight with professionals on their first bout. When you are in the market, you are in there with the pros. The punches are real… and they feel that way, too.

Novice traders can find themselves in some very perilous situations if they are not careful. The covered call is often the first options trade that someone learns. It involves long (buying) stock and a short (selling) a call. The most you can lose is what you paid for the stock, less the credit received for selling the call (not counting commissions.) If the trader exits the trade in the wrong order – sell the stock before buying back the call – they will find themselves with a naked call. In that situation, the trader has UNLIMITED RISK. That does happen and it can be very hazardous to your portfolio.

I would argue that you don’t need to learn with real money, if you are serious about learning.

If you need emotion or skin-in-the-game to be interested, I would suggest you reflect on what that says about yourself. I am not making any assumptions or judgments. It could mean nothing or a lot of different things. For example: Are you impatient? Are you really committed to learning or do you just want to make money, quickly? Are you a gambler? Etc.

Emotion is a very important factor in investing. It can be your worst enemy. That is the reason I hammer on my students for having a trading plan with Primary and Secondary Exits defined BEFORE they enter a trade. That is the best way to control emotions.

I have heard more than one OptionsANIMAL graduate say that they wished someone would have told them (more strongly – because they are all most certainly told) not to trade with real money before graduating.

IN FACT, I would be surprised if you could be consistently profitable without going through an entire options education program, like OptionsANIMAL. So, instead of paper trading, you’re ok with that money being considered as tuition, go for it!

If you’re ok with losing that money, maybe you should consider an investment in options education. It reminds me of a quote from Ben Franklin “The only thing more expensive than education is ignorance.”

As a 23 year old with a decent amount of trading experience, I decided to try options. It always seemed “scary” which led to me trading other things like crypto and stocks. I always thought options were interesting but they seemed more complicated. With “theta” and “delta” and strike price and all these other things that made it seem super hard to understand. I finally decided I wanted to try them and started watching some YouTube videos but it still wasn’t really making sense and was hard for me to wrap my head around. That’s when I was introduced to OptionsAnimal by a friend. OptionsAnimal is a great options education for all skill levels in trading, from beginners who have never traded before, to more advanced traders looking to hone their skills and engage in a community of real, honest traders, not “gurus” trying to sell stock picks or other services. The education breaks trading down to a fundamental level that focuses on learning how markets and trading work, as opposed to just putting out stock picks or a single trading strategy that doesn’t always work. Instead they focus on building an understanding of why and how and provide a framework for building your own strategies based on solid trading theory. They also simplified the daunting jargon of options and made the Greeks, and other seemingly complicated aspects of options easy to understand and utilize in trading. The biggest benefit of OptionsAnimal beyond the education, however, and the thing that I think separates them the most from any competitors is the community. There are always live classes being held either covering education material, or live Q and A sessions with instructors, or weekly market updates on how the markets are acting, upcoming potential catalysts, etc. In addition, there are forums in the website where all of the instructors are available to communicate with and ask questions to, as well as the entire community in general. Overall it is a far superior experience to other competitors I have tried. I would recommend to anyone looking to get into options or looking to advance their skills and understanding.

The power of this educational program lies in the value of the coaches that you will have access to when you join, not if. The value of their combined contribution is worth more than any initial investment. This is not training, it is a mindset reset for the 99 percent of regular joes that struggle to gain an edge while investing in the stock market.
